Eight is a lot of legs, David

The Octopus is quite the animal, I keep learning bizarre and impressive facts about them. They are also the namesake of one of the UK's leading green energy providers. Let me spend a moment explaining what that is and why it's important, before telling you why I like Octopus so much.

Unless you've been hidden under a rock for the past couple of decades, you will be aware of the troubling matter of Climate Change. The science is irrefutable and the prognosis is terrifying. We have literally ten years to turn this super-tanker around, or be faced with a planet no longer fit for purpose. Climate Change as a term is in fact now obsolete and has been upgraded to Climate Crisis. Greenhouse Gas emissions (namely Carbon) are causing this crisis. You still with me?

Rather than finding yourself fixed to the spot, staring into the headlights of the Climate Crisis, take a moment to believe that us humans can fix this. Step one is for everyone to believe that. Step two is for everyone to do something. No single person is expected to fix the Climate Crisis but every single person is expected to join in collectively fixing it.

You might still be feeling a bit bunny-in-the-headlights, but I intend to use this monthly blog series to share some easy actions you can take which will make a big difference. Starting with by far the biggest change you can make to reduce your own personal carbon footprint: switching to green energy in your home. The cost difference is negligible and frankly, the planet is worth just a tiny bit of investment. We’ve dined out on cheap fossil fuels for too long and that era is over.

Back to Octopus. Octopus Energy are an award-winning energy provider and switching to their 100% green energy tariff will take you minutes. This blog post is not sponsored by them, I'm just sharing my favourite provider to give you a hand, but other super green energy providers do exist (check out ecotricity or good energy for starters). The key thing to look out for is that they (like Octopus) invest in new windmills or solar panels and are therefore growing the proportion of green energy that we generate in the UK. Without that we'll be stuck using fossil fuels for far longer than we should.

So now you know why I love, actually, the majestic Octopus and I hope this blog has given you one more way to ease your eco-anxiety.
